POLICE OFFICER MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Please review each department’s requirements carefully prior to completing the application. It is your responsibility to ensure that you meet the minimum requirements of each department before submitting your application. Failure to meet the qualifications, or falsifying information, will result in removal from individual department eligibility lists.

CATASAUQUA BOROUGH

TO BE CONSIDERED, YOU MUST:

  • Be at least 21 years of age by the deadline for submitting applications
  • Be a U.S. Citizen
  • Possess a valid driver’s license
  • Be physically and mentally fit to perform the duties of a police officer
  • Possess a high school diploma or GED and be certified under act 120 or
  • Have obtained a bachelor’s degree from and accredited college or university or
    Have obtained an associate’s degree from and accredited college or university in criminal justice/law enforcement or a related police field or
    Must be in the last semester of obtaining his or her college degree or associate’s degree in law enforcement and certify that he or she will have obtained that degree by the time the Civil Service testing is complete (complete to be defined as the time after completion of the written test, oral test, physical assessment test, and background examination). Further, if an applicant is allowed to proceed under this provision, if they have not obtained a degree at the time the Civil Service testing is complete, his or her name shall be automatically removed from the testing process and he or she shall be considered ineligible or
    A high school diploma or graduate equivalency diploma and have served successfully as a full time police officer for two continuous years with a state police force (or its equivalent, such as highway patrol), or as a police officer in a municipal police department.

Be “Act 120” certified or qualify for a waiver of training as required by Act 120 or currently enrolled in a certified police academy.

  • Shall speak, read and write the English language.
  • Must be of good moral character
  • Must reside in the Borough or within ten (10) miles of the geographic limits of the Borough. This requirement must be satisfied within two (2) years following the date on which the oath of office as a police officer of the Catasauqua Police Department is signed.

COOPERSBURG BOROUGH

TO BE CONSIDERED, YOU MUST:

  • Be at least 21 years of age by the deadline for submitting applications
  • Be a U.S. Citizen
  • Possess a valid driver’s license
  • Possess a high school diploma or GED
  • Reside within 20 air miles within 1 year of appointment
  • Act 120 certification required upon conditional offer of employment
  • Successfully complete written, oral, medical, psychological and physical agility examinations and a thorough background investigation

COPLAY BOROUGH

TO BE CONSIDERED, YOU MUST:

  • Be at least 21 years of age by the deadline for submitting applications
  • Be a U.S. Citizen
  • Possess a valid driver’s license
  • Possess a high school diploma or GED
  • Be a resident of Pennsylvania at the time of appointment
  • Be physically and mentally fit to perform the duties of a police officer
  • Successfully complete written, oral, medical, psychological, physical agility and polygraph examinations, and a thorough background investigation.
  • Not have any visible earplugs, gauges or eyelets, or other visible similar body stretching jewelry or ornamentation.

EMMAUS BOROUGH

TO BE CONSIDERED, YOU MUST:

  • Be at least 21 years of age by date of hire
  • Be a U.S. Citizen
  • Possess a Pennsylvania Driver’s License prior to appointment
  • Possess a high school diploma or GED
  • Be physically & mentally fit to perform duties of a Police Officer
  • Speak, read and write the English language
  • Be of good moral character
  • Reside within 20 air miles of Borough Hall within a year of swearing in
  • Never been convicted of a felony
  • Never defaulted on a student loan (insured by the U.S. Government)
  • Never failed an department-administered urinalysis drug test
  • Have registered with the Selective Service System (for males only)
  • No failures of a departmental administered psychological examination.
  • No illegal distribution of drugs, prescription or otherwise

FOUNTAIN HILL BOROUGH

TO BE CONSIDERED, YOU MUST:

  • Be at least 21 years of age by the deadline for submitting applications
  • Be a U.S. Citizen
  • Possess a valid driver’s license
  • Possess a high school diploma or GED
  • Be a resident of Pennsylvania at the time of appointment
  • Be physically and mentally fit to perform the duties of a Police Officer
  • Act 120 certification required upon conditional offer of employment
  • Successfully complete written, oral, medical, psychological and physical agility examinations and a thorough background investigation

MACUNGIE BOROUGH

TO BE CONSIDERED, YOU MUST:

  • Citizenship – An applicant shall be a citizen of the United States of America and shall provide satisfactory evidence of citizenship.
  • Residence- All full-time officers must, within one (1) year of becoming employed by the Borough, reside within a twenty-five (25) mile radius of the Borough limits.
  • Applicant must be at least twenty-one (21) years of age before the deadline for submitting completed applications.
  • Applicant must have a valid License Pennsylvania motor vehicles (automobile) operator’s license.
  • Applicant must be a graduate from an accredited high school or have a general equivalency diploma, be able to speak, read and write the English language at the time of hire and possess Act 120 Certification. Applicants and new hires are encouraged to acquire a two (2) year college degree in criminal justice, law enforcement or a related police field or earn at least 15 college credits in the criminal justice, law enforcement or a related police field.
  • Applicant must be of good reputation, moral character and habits. The applicant must present separately prepared references from three (3) individuals who are not related to the applicant and who can be contacted within a reasonable time.

SALISBURY TOWNSHIP

TO BE CONSIDERED, YOU MUST:

  • Be at least 21 years of age by the deadline for submitting applications
  • Be a U.S. Citizen
  • Possess a Pennsylvania Driver’s License prior to appointment
  • Be physically, medically and psychologically fit to perform the essential job functions of a police officer
  • Possess a diploma from an accredited high school or a graduate equivalency diploma.
  • Speak, read and write the English language
  • Be of good moral character

SOUTH WHITEHALL TOWNSHIP

TO BE CONSIDERED, YOU MUST:

  • Be at least 21 years of age by the deadline for submitting applications
  • Be a U.S. Citizen
  • Possess a high school diploma or equivalent GED
  • Prior to appointment, must possess a valid motor operator’s license issued by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania
  • A successful Applicant must also live within a radius of twenty-five miles from the boundaries of the Township within six months of completing his/her probationary period, and must continually maintain this residency requirement while a police officer.
  • Be physically and mentally fit to perform the full duties of a police officer
  • Starting salary may be adjusted based on prior full time law enforcement experience

UPPER MACUNGIE TOWNSHIP

TO BE CONSIDERED, YOU MUST:

  • Be at least 21 years of age by the deadline for submitting applications
  • Be a U.S. Citizen
  • Possess a valid driver’s license
  • Possess a high school diploma or GED
  • Be a resident of Pennsylvania at the time of appointment
  • Be physically and mentally fit to perform the duties of a police officer
  • Successfully complete written, oral, medical, psychological, physical agility, and polygraph examinations and thorough background investigation
  • Applicants must be free of tattoos on the face, ears, neck and hands (excludes wedding band style tattoo). Any visible tattoos on the arms while wearing the Upper Macungie Township Police Department uniform must comply with policy.
  • Not have any visible earplugs, gauges or eyelets, or other visible similar body stretching jewelry or ornamentation.
  • Act 120 certification preferred upon conditional offer of employment

UPPER SAUCON TOWNSHIP

TO BE CONSIDERED, YOU MUST:

  • Be at least 21 years of age by the deadline for submitting applications
  • Be a U.S. Citizen
  • Possess a valid driver’s license
  • Be a resident of Pennsylvania at the time of appointment
  • Have acquired an Associate’s Degree or its equivalent (60 credit hours) from an accredited college OR university OR have an honorable discharge from active military with at least 48 months of service OR have worked 4,000 hours as a full time police officer (The term accredited means that the institution is published in the most current Higher Education Directory.
  • Be physically and mentally fit to perform the duties of a police officer
  • Successfully complete written, oral, medical, psychological, physical agility, and polygraph examinations and thorough background investigation

WHITEHALL TOWNSHIP

TO BE CONSIDERED, YOU MUST:

  • Be at least 21 years of age by the deadline for submitting applications
  • Be a U.S. Citizen
  • Successfully complete written, oral, medical, psychological, physical agility, and polygraph examinations and thorough background investigation
  • Possess a valid driver’s license
  • Be physically and mentally fit to perform the duties of a police officer
  • Be a resident of Pennsylvania at the time of appointment
  • Must reside within 15 air miles of the Township borders within 6 months of completing probation
  • Never been convicted of a felony or had Criminal arrests/behavior, which would not reflect well on the Whitehall Township Police.
  • Never defaulted on a student loan (insured by the U.S. Government)
  • Never failed a department-administered urinalysis drug test
  • Have registered with the Selective Service System (for males only)
  • Have not used marijuana (in any form), at all, within the last two (2) years
  • Have not used any other illegal drug, at all, in the past five (5) years
  • Never sold, distributed or manufactured any illegal drug with the exception of a small amount of marijuana as defined by Pennsylvania statute
  • Have not used any prescription drug or used a legally obtainable substance in a manner for which it was not intended within three years (36 months) preceding the date of the preliminary application for employment
  • For police officer candidates, he or she shall have acquired an Associate’s Degree or its equivalent (60 credit hours) from an accredited college or university OR shall have completed 4,000 Hours of service as a full time police officer,
  • OR:
    60 semester credit hours are waived for those applicants with at least four years of full active military duty with an honorable discharge.
    30 semester credit hours waived for the applicant with two full years of any law enforcement experience that encompasses the powers of arrest under State and/or Federal Law. Determination of relevant law enforcement experience to be made by the Whitehall Township Police on a case-by-case basis. 30 semester credit hours are waived for those applicants with at least two years of full active military duty with an honorable discharge.
  • Falsification, omission, or misrepresentation of any information during the completion of the Formal Application for Employment, Background Screening Booklet, and any other documents/processes associated with the Candidate Selection Procedures.
  • Never been removed for cause from any other Whitehall Township Civil Service Hiring List.
